HLG Kicks Off its 2022 Giving Program by Supporting Foster Children

Garretts-PlaceTo celebrate Foster Care Awareness Month, Harris Local Government kicks off its 2022 giving program, HLG Gives, by supporting Garrett’s Place. Often children going into foster care have nothing but a shopping or trash bag to carry their hastily gathered items. Garrett’s Place, a charitable organization located near HLG’s Hueytown, Alabama office, assists foster children by providing them with their very own piece of luggage as well as a “shopping” experience from donations to help them transition into a foster care placement. There are nearly 6,000 children in Alabama’s foster care system.

Amy Parker, one of HLG’s “goodness ambassadors,” recently spoke with the folks at Garrett’s Place to check for any pressing needs. The organization was thrilled HLG selected it as its Spring charity and shared the following: “We can always use bath-time things for the children so they don’t feel so uncomfortable at a very vulnerable time. We also only give new toiletries (travel size is ok), such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. New under clothes and pajamas are always needed. We take gently used clothes, toys and books; children’s Bibles are always welcome. Also suitcases: the kids normally choose medium-sized luggage and they love the ones that roll.”

If you would like to make a financial donation to Garrett’s Place, check out the GoFundMe page HLG has set up for this purpose. As of the time of this writing, we’re only $100 away from our $500 goal – can you help us get to the finish line?
